Description
The west side of San Francisco can be an inhospitable place.
On a winter day, the ocean appears as a slow motion painting, 20 foot swells folding over themselves crashing top-to-bottom. The average spring day sends a ripping breeze, depositing sand into every unprotected crevice. Summer wraps you in a dark, cold blanket of fog – inspiring dread the moment you return from anywhere North, South, or East where the sun shines unopposed. Fall… well Fall is quite the opposite. A local’s summer as it’s called, the weather turns on for a brief moment and the entire neighborhood makes hay at the beach.
This character is exactly what kept me in San Francisco for sixteen years. I was drawn to the history, the people, and the place just as much as the world class surf. In the avenues is where I carried my camera day in and day out, looking for something in particular.
Outbound is a reflection of that something, a long term photo project dedicated to the place my heart calls home. Despite having left San Francisco, the search does still continue.
